What is Dark Arisen?
So glad you asked. Dark Arisen is a new anthology of Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror that will feature short fiction from the hottest up and coming authors as well as established favorites.
But more importantly, Dark Arisen is an anthology in support of the family of one of the most incredible SFF authors ever, Brandon Barr, who lost his battle with cancer in 2018.
(You can read about Brandon’s story HERE)
“A morally gray warrior battles against the authoritarian regime. A rule-breaking sorceress flaunts her order to fight back against unfair regulations. A crippled, embittered dragon starts a resistance movement against a cruel Overlord.”
In so much modern fiction, we focus on the “good guys” and their struggle against evil. Or we’re faced with good and evil on both sides, leaving it anyone’s guess who the heroes and villains really are.
In Dark Arisen, we want to see antiheroes and other morally gray (or worse) protagonists fighting against the dominion of a darker evil. Stories that make us question what it really means to be a hero and what lengths we might go to for a cause. Even if it’s for the wrong reasons.
What are we looking for?
Previously unpublished short fiction written in English. Whether an author is just getting started or has published 100 times before, we want to see your best work.
No simultaneous submissions please. Multiple submissions are fine, but please limit it to your two best stories.
Specifically, we’re looking for stories that fall into any sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, or horror except erotica or romance (romantic or erotic sub-plots are fine, so long as they are not the main storyline). Supernatural thriller or suspense will also be considered.
Given the theme of the anthology, stories should be built around oppression and domination with a focus on heroes and antiheroes who bend or break rules, with themes of resistance, survival, betrayal, redemption, and courage.
How you choose to interpret those concepts and themes, however, is entirely up to you.
Stories should be between 3k and 10k words, though slight to moderate deviations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Any author accepted in the anthology will receive a flat payment of $50 USD.
Any author whose story is not accepted into the anthology will not give up any rights whatsoever. We will not use any part of such story for any purpose.
For authors who are accepted, we will be granted exclusive world publishing rights to the story (including print and audio) for a period of one year after the date of publication. After that year, you will be free to republish your story in any non-exclusive way you wish. All copyrights will remain with the author.
Submissions will be accepted until midnight (CDT) December 31st 2019.
